MATERIALS
Eco-friendly materials utilized in food packaging prioritize sustainability and environmental responsibility.
Sustainable materials, absolute priority
materials are carefully selected to minimize harm to the planet while still providing effective packaging solutions. They are often biodegradable, compostable, or recyclable, contributing to a reduction in waste and pollution. By embracing ecofriendly materials, food packaging strives to align with principles of a circular economy, where resources are used efficiently and waste is minimized.
LIST OF MATERIALS
BAGASSE
Bagasse is a plant-based material widely used in foodservice packaging. It is derived from crushed sugarcane pulp, specifically the fibrous residue left behind after sugarcane is harvested. It is naturally beige.
WHEAT STRAW
Wheat straw is a byproduct of wheat cultivation, and it has gained attention due to its sustainable properties.
It is abundant and typically discarded, reducing waste and environmental impact. It has a whiter color with entangled fibers.
CELLULOSE BASED FOIL
Cellulose, a natural polymer found in plant cell walls, is an abundant and renewable resource. This makes cellulose-based materials an eco-friendly choice for foodservice packaging, reducing the reliance on non-renewable resources. This makes it possible to have fully compostable transparent surfaces.
R-PET
R-PET is a recycled form of PET, which is used in foodservice for items like water bottles, salad containers, and more. We like to use it for our lids. By utilizing R-PET, the industry reduces its dependence on virgin plastics, contributing to environmental sustainability.
PLA
Polylactic acid (PLA) is a biodegradable polymer of lactic acid, which is produced via fermentation processes of sugar or starch (e.g. corn). After this process, the lactic acid is polymerized into another polymer called Polylactic acid (PLA). The result is a white, translucent or clear bioplastic, made of 100% natural resources. This material can be printed, and it’s indicated suitable for cold drinks and frozen food.
PAPER & WOOD
Wood and paper are integral materials in food packaging, with paper often derived from wood pulp. Around 90% of paper pulp is sourced from wood, making it a significant component in paper-based food packaging materials.
PP
Polypropylene (PP) is widely employed in food packaging for several reasons. It is one of the most extensively recycled plastics, making it environmentally friendly. Renowned for its waterproof and moisture-resistant properties, PP is an ideal material for packaging, ensuring the integrity and safety of food products.
RICE HUSK
Rice husk is a reusable material derived from the outer layer of rice grains, it contains hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin, making it a viable substitute for traditional packaging materials like styrofoam and low-density polyethylene.
